From Coolangatta, keen to surf Chiba (new permanent resident).

Hi guys.

I've just come from Coolangatta Australia and i'm living in Matsudo Shi Chiba (Matsudo is just across the Edogawa River on the way to Chiba) and i'm keen to hit the waves in Chiba.

Have surfed for 21 years in Aust. and been on the southern end of the Gold Coast for the past 15 years.

I'm living here now with my Jp. wife and kids (1y.o. and 3y.o.) permanently.

Reason i've posted here is to make friends and chip in for rides to Chiba or get people to chip in with me as I have a Subaru Wagon.

Anyone keen? I don't care what waves I surf. Happy to go anywhere. I also have many Jp. friends here who surf but haven't managed to catch up with them yet as we've been flat out getting organized.

Feel free to add me on Facebook. A search within Facebook for Heath Keegan should get me straight away.

Chow4now!

PS - I'm not a head case surfer (e.g. I don't look down on people with less surfing ability than me), just a purist, and I usually get along with everyone.

G'day Heath. Yeah your brother-in-law said you'd be coming. Don't really go to Chiba that much, and I wonder if you're enough of a purist to hit my spots in winter. You're in shin matsudo, right?

of course you'll need protein pills and put your helmet on too to surf major tom's spots in winter!

LOL. Protein pills and a lot of rubber.  Yes Major Tom Tom, B I Law said he had a friend on here. We just got the internet on at our new place in Kamagaya so i'm back into the swing of things online. And how nice it is to be back online again. It's like being in a penitentiary having no internet.

Anyway's i'm not sure if I can handle the winter surfing here as I have no idea actually how cold it is in the water. I came here in Feb. last year but didn't surf. It was super cold at that time. If the waves are really good and there's no crowds I don't really care about the cold. Just hate making the effort in winter if the waves are shit. Will definitely have to buy a good sealed seam wetsuit however.

Surfed a place in Ibaraki the Sunday before last. It was called Kashima or Kashiwa or something like that. Was sizey enough to throw your board around but very bumpy and risky on a full rail turn due to the onshore wind.

I reckon judging by the map I bought that there's waves people don't surf on this coastline and I will find them. Just have to play my cards right with the locals I meet in those spots cos' i've heard they can be very heavy. Hopefully good surfing ettiquette and respect will hold me in good stead.

rots ob rucku! You can get a few waves to yourself if you know the right times to hit it. Do you have waterproof night vision glasses? wink

Summer is OK cos first light comes early enough to beat (most of) the Tokyo boys to the water, but winter is a different story. The crowds do thin slightly in winter, but only slightly.

Cold? If you intend to surf Ibaraki through winter you will need all the fruit. A good 4/3 or 5/3, boots, gloves and a hood. The water temp gets down to around 12'C, so yes, it's bloody freezing! I get dished on by the fellas for suggesting Cleanline Surf for wetties, but they do have good deals in the close out sales section. The Rip Curl F-Bombs are toasty! But, they are made in China by slave laborers, not that I give a fark. big_smile

Dawn Patrol: You'd have to be wearing the rose coloured glasses today to even think about going surfing. It's onshore, bumpy, rippy, small and crowded. Save yourself the two hour drive and go about your business today while having complete peace of mind in the fact that the surf is absolute CRAP!

Re: From Coolangatta, keen to surf Chiba (new permanent resident).

Aloha Heath,

I would love to chip in and go for a session or two with you guys if you're still doing that. I've recently moved back from Hawaii about a month ago, and am dying to get in the water. I would need to rent everything since I didn't even bring my board with me though... I figured I probably wouldn't surf since it's cold during this time of the year plus I was only going to be here for a few months, but I am getting pretty desperate at this point. Do you know a decent place to rent all the gear in Chiba? Although I'm from Tokyo originally, I've never surfed in Japan so I'm up for any spot that you guys want to go.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Heath doesn't seem very keen. I'd imagine you'd have no luck renting boots, gloves and a hood.
