16 year old Minori Kawai has won the Women’s Ichinomiya Chiba Open which was held on Sunday, May 28th.

This is the first victory on the senior pro circuit for Minori Kawai. The 16-year-old, came from behind to win her semifinal against Dimity Stoyle from Australia, and then went on to win the final against Hinako Kurokawa.

Of the win Kawai said, “I’m so happy to win a big tournament like this. I want to improve more and more and be able to win a medal.”

The win moved Kawai to 23rd in the series rankings, a jump up of 95 places.

In the men’s comp, Jesse Mendes (Brazil) took first place, beating Australia’s Cooper Chapman in the final.

The comp was a great prelude to the 2020 Tokyo Games, where surfing will make its Olympic debut.
